Correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, exhibition catalogs, souvenir Reuben Award dinner programs, meeting minutes, slides, photographs, and Scribe's Notes as written by Marge Devine, NCS secretary, for informal announcements and reminders to NCS members, miscellaneous editions of the NCS publications including the National Cartoonists Society Album, Newsletter, The Cartoonist, and The American Cartoonist. Except for Scribe's Notes, a complete run of all the NCS publications have been removed from this collection to be cataloged separately by the library. All duplicate issues of the NCS publications have been retained in this collection. The Jimmy Swinnerton subcollection contains twenty-three pieces of original art work by Swinnerton and his colleagues, an award from the American Institute of Fine Arts, and a color photograph of Swinnerton Arch, Arizona. Marge Devine donated numerous books to the bibrary as part of the NCS collection. These books have been cataloged separately into the library's book collection and may be identified by a special book plate designed by Mort Walker.

James Guilford Swinnerton, born in Eureka, California, is known as the creator of numerous comic strips including Little Bears and Tykes, Little Jimmy, Mr. Jack, and Mount Ararat. In 1892, he landed his first job at the San Francisco Examiner and by 1896 became the paper's political cartoonist. He later moved to New York wher he worked as a comic Strip artist for the New York Journal. American cartoonist, best known for the long-running comic strips Terry and the pirates and Steve Canyon. Lived for many years in New City, NY as a neighbor of Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, Maxwell Anderson, Alan Jay Lerner, and others. Also an original board member of the Kurt Weill for Music thanks to his long association with Lenya. Caniff died in 1988. National Cartoonists Society

The National Cartoonists Society grew out of the so-called "chalk talks" that a number of cartoonists did for the troops during World War II. The Society was officially formed in March of 1946 with Rube Goldberg as its first president. Within two weeks, the society had 32 members.
